Practical and Transferable Skills

Over the past 2 years I have gained both practical and transferable during my Level 3 BTEC Media course. For instance I have now picked up important ICT Skills thats have related to my Media work such as, Final Cut Pro which was used a lot over the two years because thats was the software I used to edit my footage for all of my productions for example my documentary, chat show, short film, TV advert, and music video. Each of these productions show my different abilities for different types of productions that I created, this is shown in the editorially with the help and use of the special effects, sound, transitions and graphics.

At the beginning of my first year I also had to adjust to a new site to me called Blogger, that I was going to have to often use since thats where all my work will be handed in and I am able to share that work with my teacher. I had to learn that for each unit I had to make a new blog for each so that posts didn't clash with others. Also attaching both images and videos to my posts using the icons at the top of the blogger post since you were not able to just drag it to the work from the desktop, but there was a process of going through files. 

Teamwork is another skill that I have gained during my BTEC Media course since we have had to do this regularly when putting a production. This then built up my communication skills since we have to communicate to get the production done since their were deadlines that we had to meet. An example of a time that my group and I had to communicate is when pitching our ideas to one another, such as my chat show pitch were I had to explain in full detail and then they had to communicate back to me with comments and also questions. 
Another skill that I have gained throughout my two years is to listen to one another when were doing our productions. For instance when doing our focus groups we have to listen to our feedback therefore we are able to improve so that our audience will enjoy it more and it can build up our audience making it more and more popular. 

Another skill that I have learned throughout the the two years is the different camera languages and how to use them effectively for example when filming shots its important not to use a lot of dead space, and that long shots look so boring so its important to keep shots short. Also its good to use different shots, movements, and angles during the filming process because its good to have shots to play around with during the editing stages.

I will learn to research, analyse and craft communications in a variety of media. This programme introduces students to academic, creative and critical approaches to media in the digital age. Through coursework and independent projects, students engage in critical reflection while producing material across a range of media - from text and images to video and sound. This course benefits me because I would be equipped with transferable skills that can be carried over into the work place. This also benefits me because with knowledge and intellectual skills I would be able to critically evaluate and participate in the contemporary media environment.

When doing this Media Studies course at Brighton University I will obtain a sound theoretical framework and practical skills that I can use throughout my career. I can shape my degree through my choice of options, which allow me to pursue an interest in film and screen-based media, digital photography, community enterprise, and social and mobile media. This helps me personally because I already have experience from my BTEC Level 3 Media course but it benefits me greater because I am able to extend my knowledge on it.With a media studies degree that allows me the chance to become a tv show producer since that is what i had wanted to do therefore this course helps me get on the path of getting to my dream job.

Developing Technologies

The development of digital media technology is still an ongoing development and it has also had a massive significance on media institutions and their audiences. The television and film industry are continuously changing and updating new ways to distribute their product to their audience. An example would be that nowadays is that audiences have the ability to watch a TV programme or film online due to streaming platforms, this gives the audience a choice to purchase the movie or to stream it online on their smartphone, or home computer.

Distributors have saved millions since there are other ways of sourcing materials than actual going through the stage of creating the media disc, its much easier and cheaper to just send out a file from a computer and still continue to release their product to the same amount of audiences members they would have had if it were a physical media digital disc.

Cinema releases also do not need the process of a reel film they could just get sent the production file to their computer. This is beneficial because this a quicker way to receive a new release and all that is needed is the connection of internet and the access to a computer. This shows that the old way of viewing films, TV programmes by using digital media discs is slowly becoming less popular and that new viewing platforms are increasing in popularity. This type of viewing platform is more popular with the younger generation because they are more up to date with latest technologies and have found new ways to forget about DVD's and found easier and more convenient platforms to purchase or view media productions.
 
Companies are adapting to new technology all around the world and is pushing old media out industry giving the chance for better and effective technology to replace it. For instance the use of 2D and 3D has been applied a lot with Disney and Pixar. 2D animations have been used by Disney since it was the standard form of animation, but in the 70's technology had updated and companies like Disney were able to have 3D or CG animation or graphics.


Some advantages of digital television is that their are more channels compared to terrestrial channels, digital television also have high quality image and sound and is even better image quality in HD. Also interactive services are available is especially if they have both broadband and network connection. Digital broadcasting consumes less bandwidth than analogue broadcasting. This frees space for extra wireless networks and this improves the communication services. A disadvantage is that with so many channels they may have endless repeats to fill slots.

Trade Fairs are events that companies of possible different nationalities present their products or their services to any perspective client. This is usually done in a booth of a certain size which may be placed adjacent to any other suppliers. Trade fairs usually have a large number of people participating than other trade events. 

Trade fairs are targeted to people that are involved in an industry or could just be interested in the industry. Attending trade fairs and exhibiting at them may be a good way to get the word out about your industry and possibly create brand awareness. Trade fairs are also open to a wide range of audiences therefore this may be a good idea to exhibit your industry at a trade fair because more people are starting to know about and possibly take an interest into it and their knowledge of the industry will grow an this may encourage people to want to tell friends and family about it which widens the audience once again. 

BVE 

BVE is the uk's leading entertainment and media tech event. BVE has evolved and covers things such as Connected Media, AV Systems Integration, Live Production, VR and creative sectors. Every year the BVE draws in about 15,000 visitors that attend and learn and discover about different products, services and trends from hundreds of companies both distributors and manufacturers. 

BVE is an example of a trade fair that is based in the UK. BVE would benefit an aspiring employee in the film or TV sector because this would give people a good chance to expand contacts and networks which can be done with hundreds of other industries and this can keep you up to date with different trends, projects etc. this allows people to meet face to face with people behind the industry and gives them the chance to do business with them.  This also gives the chance for visitors to discover tests and experiments with the latest gear for free.

The broadcasting act 1990 was made to change the structure of the British broadcasting, specifically British television and was described by Margret Thatcher as "the last bastion of restrictive practices". The impact of the 1990 broadcasting act was that television or radio companies other than the regulator became the broadcasters as had been the case from 1955-1964 of the Independent Television Authority. 

The broadcasting act allowed the making of another analogue terrestrial channel on television shown in the UK which had turned out to be channel 5. It was stipulated that the channel the BBC was now obliged to source at least 25% of it's output from independent production companies. 

The broadcasting Act was a good thing because it allowed for other satellite and cable channels to introduced on television for example Sky, Virgin Media etc. Therefore it let people watch better television with more channels and more shows instead of sticking to just the terrestrial channels.
The Independent Television Commission was created by the Broadcasting act 1990 to replace the television regulation functions of the independent broadcasting authority and cable authority. It became an existing ITV network. In 1990 the broadcasting act established Channel Four Television Corporation to run Channel 4, regulated by the Independent Television Commission. 

The broadcasting act 1990 has been praised and been criticised as a key enabling force for Rupert Murdoch ambitions in Britain. The system of awarding the ITV franchise was shown to be controversial since the show Thames Television was changed to Carlton Television and was said that this was because of political reasons. Margaret Thatchers management defiance of the trade unions was admired by TV-am and was taken off air and replaced with Good Morning TV. All franchises in England and Wales are now coming under the control of ITV since 2004.

Ethics
Ethics is the moral principles that define how a person or group acts or the conductivity of an activity. 


Codes of practice
Codes of practice are a set of written regulations issued by a professional association or an official body that explains how people in a work place should behave. In terms of shows and films shown on the BBC channel they have top hold a sort of image where they don't show things such as profanity, nudity, etc at least before the watershed which would be unethical to show since during the day children watch television and if things like profanity, nudity etc are shown on television it could influence young children which would not give the BBC a good representation and they get complains from parents. 


















An example of a show where these ethical codes of practices need to be upheld is on the news and having different ethnic news reporters. 50 years ago on the news people would usually only see white news reporters on television and would never have seen a different ethnic news reporter such as black, asian, muslim etc. However nowadays it is possible to see reporters with different ethnic backgrounds since it has been a rising issue and it has now been heard people now are starting to be treated equally and fairly no matter what their race, age etc but it is still an issue but its still being worked on. 















My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding
The British documentary series My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding is broadcasted on channel 4 and they explore the lives of several Irish travellers and they unite one of their family members in marriage. In this show the girls that are getting married and they have a specific way of dressing and acting that audiences may find unethical. For example there are girls on the show that are about 8 years old and they have a full face of make up on and they are parading around in inappropriate clothing. This could be seen unethical to some viewers because it may send out a message to other people that watch the show that the parents of those children are letting them do that on television. 

However this could be because they live different life styles to those families on the show it is seen as normal for them but for some people that are watching they may thinks it's completely unethical because they dress differently and it isn't normal to them. Also children that may watch the show may be influenced to dress like that since children are write naive and don't really know what's right and whats wrong. Also the girls that are getting married are usually still teenagers usually about the age of 16 and to their wedding they wear extremely huge and puffy wedding dresses. 


















Emerging Social Concerns

An emerging social concern example is cyber bullying especially for children and teenagers. It is up to news broadcasters, newspapers etc to make people are of this especially parents because children and teenagers tend to keep this type information from their parents so that they do not worry or 'make the situation worse' but that is not what children and teenagers should be doing because it could effect them physically and emotionally. This is an ethical obligation for news broadcasters to inform their audience on what is happening so that parents are aware and can search for signs that this may be happening to their child.

Equal Opportunities

Equal opportunities is when people have the right to be treated fairly and equally without discrimination, especially about people's race, gender or age.  In previous decades women were paid lower wages than men for doing similar work, also there was not a lot of jobs that were offered to women as much as men and women lost their jobs just for being pregnant. 

However the things that have changed over previous decades in a work place is that more women are entering a wider range of occupations. The media may have be an important part in promoting gender equality in the working environment and also the representation of both men and women. 


An example of a case brought against a media institution is when a former BBC presenter Miriam O'Reilly won her case for age discrimination against the corporation after she was fired from Countryfile shown on BBC ONE. she was one of four females presenters all in their 40's or 50's who were fired from the show. 


Belonging to a trade union 

A trade union is an organised association of workers in a trade, group of trades or profession, formed to protect and further their rights and interests. A trade union provides assistance and services to their members, what they do is ask persuade employers to treat their staff fairly, whether your employed or freelance. 

They bargain for better pay and better conditions for all their workers and they do this to make the employee's happier with their working conditions. The main trade union within the UK film and TV is BECTU and they have a wide range of services with 25,000 voluntary members. 

Trade unions main goal is to protect and advance the interest of its members. Trade unions often negotiate different agreements with employers on pay and conditions. Also trade unions may provide legal advice and financial advice to it's members. 

BECTU trade union's freelance branches bring together members who work on a freelance basis according to their craft or physical location. BECTU has an important role to play in connecting freelances to one another so that information of mutual benefit can be shared.

Exclusivity Exclusivity Agreement is the agreement that is between two or more parties to purchase goods exclusively from the specified seller in the agreement. This is an understanding that the buyer will not obtain or solicit the good that are provided by that seller while in the time period of the agreement. An example of an exclusivity agreement in the film and tv industry is that The X Factor has an exclusivity agreement to only be shown on the channel ITV and can not be shown on any other channel otherwise this could be a breach of The X Factor's exclusivity agreement with ITV.  

These exclusivity agreements are between usually between two or more companies. A benefit of exclusivity agreements are that if a seller has their hands on a product they would have the ability to sell that product for however much they wanted because that seller is the only one with that product and has the right to sell it to another company for however much they desire and if it's good enough companies would be willing to buy it. 

Confidentiality

Confidentiality agreements are a non disclosure agreement and is a legal contract between two or possibly more companies that outlines confidential material, knowledge or information that those two or more companies have wished to share with each other. Confidential agreement are similar to exclusivity agreements because companies may want to keep their agreements that they make with other companies confidential so that other companies wont take it upon themselves to compete against the buying company so they don't have to pay an excessive amount of money.

Editorial 


The editor’s job in a television and film industry is to assemble a variety of different shots in a coherent sequence. The job of the editor is also to edit the dialogue, making sure that continuity is shown throughout.  Some of the qualifications that people must have when becoming an editor of a movie or television show are, communication and media studies, fine art/visual art, graphic design, and information technology. You'll need to be proficient in using specific editing software packages, such as Avid or Final Cut Pro. An example of a famous editor is Peter Honess who was the editor for the very famous movie franchise Fast and Furious.

A television news editor can have a variety of different job titles, an such as assignment editor, or a video editor, a broadcast news analyst. To work in the television industry, some form of post secondary training in a related field is often required. Some things that a television news editor may have to do is manage reporters and news crew, also choosing which stories to cover, maintaining different professional and community contacts and also needing to be caught up to date with the different pieces of news going on around the world, nationally and locally etc. An example of TV news editor is John Simpson who is an editor for the subject of World Affairs.

Management 

A production manager is when someone is involved with the all the planning, coordination and control of manufacturing processes. They also make sure that goods and services are produced correctly and that the correct amount is produced at the correct cost and level of quality. Some of the skills that are needed to fulfil the role of a production manager is planning and organising different production schedules, assessing projects and the resource requirements, estimating, and agreeing budgets, making sure that the health and safety regulations are met correctly and efficiently. An example of a production manager is Daniel Hank who is the production manager for the television series Shadowhunters.

Location Manager is part of the film crew and they are responsible for finding and securing the different locations that they want to use when filming a film or television series. They must also obtain all things needed so that they can use that location for example fire, police and other governmental permits. The skills that are needed to fulfil this role of a location manager is to have great communication skills, plus also having the ability to work well with a diverse range of people, they must also be very organised and also have a diplomatic approach, to encourage and persuade people. An example of location manager from a television series is John Rackich from the show Shadowhunters. 

The field manager is a job role that works within the news industry they’re the people that oversees the employees that travel to work in sites or in the field. The main task that the field manager has is to supervise people on a site, ensuring everyone on the team is performing their responsibilities in the field. Some of the skills that are needed to fulfil the field manager’s role are to have good organisation, good time management making sure that you are on time, interpersonal and relationship-building skills, having good communication skills with co-workers and also having good problem-solving skills since there are always problem that occur in a work place.


Technical 


Technical manager’s jobs are to support and lead the technical team in a corporate environment. There are a variety of different things that technicians for example technicians can be from sounds technicians, to lighting and digital therefore they are in charge of all the technology that they need when making a film or television show. The skills that will be required when applying for a job to be a technician is to have the ability to find and fix problems, the ability to explain technical problems in everyday English, also to have excellent customer service skills and organisational skills. An example of a technician in the film industry is Aaron Picot from the television series Sweet Vicious. 

A director of photography is the leading person who works with the camera crews working on a film, television production, and is responsible for making artistic and technical decisions related to the image on the screen. Some of the skills that are needed to fulfil the role of a director of photography are to have the capability to frame shots and recognise good shots. Knowing the technical basics of photography for example this might include knowing how to make lighting work to your advantage so you can see what you want the audience to see, knowing how to use different lenses, and how film speeds and exposures work. An example of a director of photography is Larry Reibman who works on the television series Pretty Little Liars. 
 
An audio technician job roles can be split into two categories which are production when they record all sound on set or on location and there is post-production when they work after the filming and do things like balancing, mixing, editing and enhancing of pre-recorded audio. The skills that are needed to fulfil the role of an audio technician is to have good aural skills, great attention to detail, general technical ability and agility, also to have the ability to work as part of a team of people and also have problem solving capabilities if any problems were to occur which is very likely on a production set. An example of an audio technician is Tim Gomillion from the movie The Maze Runner. 

A costume designer is the person that is charge of wardrobe, making and hiring costumes for everyone on a stage or screen production and also managing other staff like costume makers, wardrobe supervisors and wardrobe assistants. The skills needed to fulfil the role of a costume designer is to have excellent design skills, works very good a leader of a group of people, to have organisational skills, to be aware of costs and budgeting when buying materials and clothes, the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines when needed and also to have good research skills on what costume you are creating depending on things such as era, personality, location etc. An example of a costume designer is Nancy Ceo who works on the television series The Originals. 


Creative 

A scriptwriter is a writer who practices the skill of screenwriting, writing screenplays for different media productions such as films, television programs, comics or video games. To fulfil the role of a screenwriter the skills that people will need is to have impeccable writing abilities, creativity and imagination, incredible storytelling skills and an understanding of dramatic structure also having a willingness to accept criticism and rejection for their work and ideas, and also having very good presentation skills so that you are able to explain your idea in full detail so that no one is left confused about anything and all questions have been answered. An example of scriptwriter is Elysse Applebaum for the television show The 100.  

A director is someone who supervises the actors/actresses and the technical crew when creating a film or television show.  To fulfil this role to get the best outcome of a production then a director would need to have incredible artistic vision and creative skills, to have complete commitment, to have a deep passion for film making otherwise it might not have best outcome, to be a strong and confident leader of a team, to make decisions difficult or easy and to delegate and collaborate with others in a work environment. An example of a director is Harold Zwart who directed the movie The Mortal Instruments City of Bones. 

A graphic designer is some who works on a production set who creates visual concepts, using computer software or this can be done by hand, and to also communicate ideas that motivate, inform, and captivate consumers. Some of the skills that are needed to fulfil the role of a graphic designer are to have visual Ideation and creativity, to design software for instance photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc. And also to have great web design capabilities. An example of a graphic designer is Leslie Wah who works on the television series Teen Wolf.

Fixed term contract


Their employers give fixed term contracts to employees and it will terminate at a future date when a specific term expires. For example when employees are given task that they may not be able to complete because they could be sick or possibly have maternity leave then people with a fixed term contract when then step in and cover their work. When fixed term contracts ends and it ends after 2 years of the employee’s service then they are entitled to a redundancy payment. Fixed term contracts are very common for football managers as well as football players. An example of a football manager that has had a fixed term contract is Henning Berg. However he did not complete the terminated date of his 3 year fixed term contract and left after just 57 days.

Freelance 


A freelance worker is someone who is self employed and is not committed to just one employer since they usually work for a variety of different companies. In the film industry some of the roles that a freelance worker takes on are film distribution, or they work in departments of major broadcasters. However they must have the right qualification and skills to take on these particular roles. Freelance workers are also brought on in businesses from agencies or companies.

Irregular patterns 


Irregular pattern working hours are very similar to freelance worker hours. Irregular pattern workers usually go in to work only when they’re needed or whenever they want to do work. An example of a worker that works irregular patterns is an animator who may be needed for a small part of the film that they may not be particularly in but they could be contracted to go in a take shifts. People are drawn to irregular pattern working since it has good pay. However irregular working hours could affect workers sleeping and eating patterns since they can be brought in to work at any moment.
